Tyrone Ongpauco really uses his TRD version Toyota 86. Street driving, racing Time Attack (and winning), R&D testing all kinds aftermarket parts, you name it, he’s done it in the last 14 months with his 86. Not only that, but he has thoroughly documented it step by step in his build thread on FT86Club.com.
When it came time to decide whether to stay NA or go forced induction, Tyrone knew a Vortech Supercharging System was the right choice for his 86. “I went with the Vortech kit because of the great OEM look and reputation. I wanted a smooth power delivery that would compliment the car, and I felt that it would help more on the track than a turbo.”
Tyrone turned to Ryan and Chris from Speedworks Engineering to do the install and Ecutek tune. “They did a superb job. Installation had no drama, and the Vortech kit was complete and the fit was perfect.”
Impressions after the install? “Driving the car the first time was an eye opener as to how much power was added. Wheels spin like crazy if you’re not careful with the throttle. End result was 270whp with 199tq, which pretty much made us all happy. This was done with stock injectors and stock fuel pump with the 9psi pulley on 93(equivalent) octane.”
